And yet, without a firm grasp of the general character and tendency of this author's thought, there is a great risk either of resting satisfied with his wit and picturesqueness, or of doing him the grave injustice which is done to any thinker when we quote texts without context, and use his words without their true weight in them.To all standard systems of philosophy, handbooks or summaries have been written, usually by some pupil personally acquainted with the master, and in sympathy with his character and tone of thought.
